I first got to know HRZone back in 2023, providing some editorial assistance that lasted the better part of a year. I was entering into the space as an outsider (my background is in publishing across science communication, travel and the airmedical sector). What struck me was how much was happening in the industry all at once.
DEI was everywhere, hybrid working dominated conversations and AI loomed as a slightly mysterious (more than slightly scary!) thing that everyone was bracing for but didn’t quite know what to do with.
A lot has changed since then. AI isn’t (as) mysterious anymore: it’s here and being used and the key question is: “What’s actually working for us, and what isn’t?”.
DEI and hybrid have quietly slipped down the priority list, not because they don’t matter, but because something else has taken centre stage: the pressure of trying to do more strategic work while the operational demands persist (and indeed feel like they’re constantly ramping up).
Something that’s apparent is that the profession is under real stress. Most of the HR content that’s out there and is supposed to help actually isn’t. HRZone heard this message loud and clear in its end-of-year audience research.
The profession is under real stress
Let’s get real
The HRZone research highlighted that HR functions are experiencing intense pressure and facing burnout and mental health challenges.
It also exposed a gap between AI hype and operational reality. Many practitioners are experimenting pragmatically to find out where AI can be applied in areas and ways that benefit them.
We hear the challenges you’re facing and know that what you actually want is straightforward: practical guidance and real stories from real organisations.
The topics our readers are wrestling with right now deserve coverage that actually helps and, according to HRZone’s research, these are the topics that matter most right now:
- Workplace culture and employee engagement
- Developing leaders and managers
- Organisational change
- Budget constraints and managing ROI
- Pay, reward and benefits strategy
HR functions are experiencing intense pressure
A promise to you
From the end of year research and early conversations I’m having, I know that you want to hear from industry peers what the problem was, what they tried, what worked and what didn’t. You want to learn from those who’ve faced similar challenges and can share their experiences.
You want content that has depth, nuance and, above all, is authentic and has practical application. This is what I want to deliver and is the editorial direction I’m committing to.
The bottom line is that the profession is experiencing immense stress. HR supports everyone else’s wellbeing, often at the expense of its own. I don’t want to add to this and my promise to you is to bring you useful content that starts with a problem and offers a solution.
Given the speed at which this industry evolves, I’ll be running regular temperature checks to gauge what matters most to you, right now. Please get involved when you see these as the more you tell me, the better!
I am already connecting and having exciting conversations with leaders and practitioners in the HR and L&D space. There is so much transformation happening, so much genuine commitment to people and the possibilities feel endless.

Let’s connect!
Despite the pressures, this is an industry that is resilient and is making real, tangible impact.
If you have something worth sharing, whether it’s a case study, a lesson learned the hard way, research findings or simply a topic you regularly find yourself discussing with a colleague that hasn’t yet made it into an article, I’d love to hear from you.
It’s great to be here and I’m excited about the future of HRZone and our industry and ready to support you in any way I can.
