Chancing in the moonlight

pp_default1

Employers are still in the dark about the extent to which staff moonlight, with nearly a third of Brits admitting they have more than one job – and it’s not all about wages.

Around 7 per cent of 1,400 workers surveyed by personal finance specialist The Motley Fool have two jobs on top of their main roles, despite nearly half admitting it was forbidden by bosses, while seven in 10 revealed their employer was clueless about their behaviour.

Money is the main motivator for taking on multiple jobs but a quarter of those polled justified their actions by saying they felt unappreciated in their regular role, while nearly one in five wanted to scout for new opportunities.

“Instead of moonlighting, it can be more productive to examine the way we live our lives,” said David Kuo, head of personal finance at The Motley Fool. “Revisiting budgets is a good way to identify savings that will allow us to improve our wealth without working extra long hours.”

Staff in Northern Ireland and Wales were the most likely to take on extra work, with employees in the East Midlands happiest with their job lot.
