We are a company of around 300 employees with a structure of seven grades. The grades have been calculated by an internal Job Evaluation Committee. We are currently reviewing this structure and considering 2 options.

1.Increase the number of grades to allow smaller salary bands and allow employeees to see that over time they are moving through the grades.

2. Remove the grades completely and use salary benchmark data to review salaries. However we do have other benfits such as car cash, healthcare, number of days holiday that are dependent on grade allocation and we want to ensure that these benefits are allocated consistently if we do not have the grading system.

Does have anyone have any views on the ideal number of grades a company of 300 employees should have? What are the pros and cons of removing the grades?
