Valid Notice Period

Hi,

A friend of mine is at second interview stage and was told that the notice period was 3 months.

He’s worried that when the time comes to move on getting another job would be very hard as most companies wouldn’t wait three months for a person to join.

If he handed in his notice and then refused to work the whole three months what recourse would the company have?
