One of my managers has a daughter who is studying accountancy at university.  I have agreed to her request to come and help us in the accounts office for c. 3 months during her summer break.

This is partly as a favour for her father, as I don’t really need additional capacity in Accounts at present.  However, she is diligent and I’m sure we will get something out of her time here, and we will certainly try to give her exposure to as many of the accounts office processes as possible, which will clearly help her in her course.

I don’t think she will have particularly high expectations regarding pay for this work, and interestingly her father believes in starting youngsters on a low wage, so they can learn their true worth with time and experience!

She is 19, so the minimum wage rate is £4.98 for that age group. However, paying her at that rate will create quite a burden for us.

My question is what are my legal obligations in such a case?  I certainly have no desire or intention to rip her off, but equally I don’t want to pay more than she might be expecting and that the company can afford.

Thanks

Neil
