3 consecutive 12 hour night shifts

I’ve noticed on a couple of websites that there seems to be legislation/directive to say that, whilst 3 consecutive 12 hour day shifts are OK, 3 consecutive 12 hour night shifts are not.

Does anyone know the basis of this?
