I have approx 50 staff broken into 5 teams. Most are quite young – 20 – 24 yrs old. At the moment we have a few issues with what I see as “ownership” and “commitment”.
We really started to notice that some staff are taking extended lunchbreaks and then leaving early or on the dot of 5. Whilst others are working long hours to pick up the slack and missing lunch breaks.
To try and address this we put in place regulated lunch breaks (45 mins) but what we are finding is that the clock watchers are taking there 45 mins every day – clocking in at 9 and clocking out at 5 and then the “committed” employees are still working through lunch, and after hours.
I want to reward the hard workers with more flexibility but the clock watchers will take advantage.
Any ideas of how to address this issues to improve commitment and motivation?
