Whilst researching for my next book, ‘how to make partner and still have a life‘, I spoke to many professionals who felt as if their career had come to a full stop. Here is a list of the many reasons they stated (and I’ve noticed) why professionals lose their career mojo:
- Bored
- Don’t trust your firm/organisation
- Don’t trust your partner
- Don’t trust your mentor
- Don’t trust your counseling/line/staff/appraising manager
- Don’t want to make any sacrifices to progress your career
- Don’t know how to market yourself
- Don’t have any appetite to market yourself
- Don’t know how to communicate your personal brand to the people who matter
- Don’t know how to show your strengths to others
- Analysing everything to death
- Too deep in your career comfort zone
- Waiting for things to happen
- Expecting others to make things happen
- Not prepared to take a chance on your career
- Large changes happening in your personal life, e.g. getting married, getting divorced, bereavement
- Know you are in the wrong job
- Too stressed
- Worried that you will lose your job
- Waiting until your firm does lay you off
- Know you are in the wrong profession
- Having a tough time with a client or series of clients
- Struggling to acquire the new skills required in your role or the next role up
- Sleep deprived
- Clinically depressed
- Suffering from a long term illness, such as chronic fatigue syndrome
- 27. Waiting for your boss or someone else to retire or leave the firm so you can have their job
