In the professional and personal world, there is no place for runner-up. Unless you are the best in one thing, you are vulnerable for a failure sooner or later. This is my first rule of personal and professional leadership. In order to develop your leadership, you need to identify that ONE SKILL in which you are the “best” or you are atleast ‘better’ than people, peers, friends or colleagues around you. The challenge is to find that ONE THING.

Being better in something is a relative measure and sometimes it could just be self-acclaimed. I perfectly understand that. Thats why I give the frame of reference as your peers, colleagues or team members you work with. In my later posts, I will highlight what I mean by comparison and how I ask people to compare whether or not they are better than circle around them.

Ericsson & Charness (1993) showed one method called ‘deliberate practice’ to achieve expert level performance in that ONE THING. Sharpening the skill needs concerted efforts over long period of time. ‘Deliberate Practice’ includes focused practice and acting on the feedback. Analyzing several leaders and managers during my research revealed a startling fact that leaders are not generalists, rather they are the specialists. They are specialists in ONE thing which they excel slowly and slowly and continuously keep pushing their limits. In subsequent posts I will write more about how “one best thing” rule drives the “personal resonance” to achieve performance and ignite inner leadership.
