“Someone say something positive?” (Hugo Taylor) “I’m positively knackered!” (Colin Baker)
A quote from a couple of this year’s ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’ inductees, which, according to a recent article by Gary Stern in CNN Money, sums up just how the UK workforce is feeling at this moment……. shattered!
Stern highlights how many employees strive to appear happy to have kept their jobs throughout the recession, not wanting to complain or show a lack of enthusiasm, but it seems many individuals’ attention span, passion and motivational levels are dwindling.
Stern draws on a recent study by Opinion Matters which revealed that:
- 72% of individuals feel stressed
- 67% are considering switching careers
- 85% said their job intruded on their personal life
- 42% lost sleep over work matters
These shocking statistics illustrate that a huge number of employees are ‘burning the candle at both ends’.
John Izzo states that due to the fiery and competitive business climate many employers do not know where to begin with employee stress and bury their heads in the sand whilst conditions escalate. Izzo names stressed employees as the ‘working wounded’ the individuals that show up to work but their motivation levels are nill and their employer fails to stimulate their enthusiasm, passion and innovation.
Whilst the public watched some so-called ‘celebrity’s’ battle creepy crawlies, Wichity grubs, a lack of food and fake tan, it seems that the situation of the distraught celebs was not that far from today’s workforce!
New Years’ resolutions for many organisations should be to boost staff outlook and address workforce engagement, motivation levels and working environments for 2013, so that your office doesn’t end up a deserted jungle.
