All eyes on will be on Steve Rowe this April when he takes the helm from current M&S chief executive Marc Bolland. Rowe, who is currently executive director of general merchandise, has been with the company for more than 26 years and made his mark with the company as the head of its highly successful food division.
Rowe started his career in retail aged 15 as a Saturday boy at M&S’s Croydon store in south London, but then joined Topshop as a trainee when he left school at 18. Four years later he was a store manager but left to join M&S because he thought it offered a better career path. Rowe has worked across the company in store management, menswear and furniture and held a number of senior positions including director of retail and e-commerce. He joined the board in 2012 when he became head of the food division. And it was here that he really made his mark.
So what’s the secret recipe to make you successful and make your mark in business, just like Steve Rowe?
Why is it that some people keep on thriving and enjoy great success while others never reach the same heights of personal achievement?
There are a number of qualities that all successful people have and use.
Mix the 5 ingredients below, combine them, and enjoy the fruits of your efforts:-
1.Resilience
Let’s face it, you’ll always experience times of uncertainty in your life, the difference is in how you handle them.
You can go ahead and make decisions to make sure you have an illusion of security, or be willing to dive into the unknown.
Being tenacious in difficult circumstances and setbacks is what will stimulate change and propel you forward.
“Resilience is accepting your new reality – even if it’s less good than the one you had before.” Elizabeth Edwards.
2.Patience
You might not see immediate results when working towards something long term.
You need to trust, persevere and see things through, even if there doesn’t seem to be any sort of change happening right now.
People who don’t success often give up too quickly, they don’t have the patience or determination to see what happens months or even years from now.
If everything came so easily and quickly, then why isn’t anyone successful?
“I’m extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.” Margaret Thatcher.
3.Networking
Successful people rarely try to go it completely alone – indeed, they’d probably tell you it’s virtually impossible.
We all benefit from the insights and perspectives from people we value.
Having access to people who can mentor you, challenge you, keep you accountable, and talk through your concerns will make or break you.
Get out there and start meeting good people – and remember to give before you ever expect to get.
“My Golden Rule of Networking is simple: Don’t keep score.” Harvey Mackay.
4.Adaptability
Having a plan is definitely important on your road to success. But what if things change?
How easily will you move from one set of circumstances to the next?
Highly successful people learn quickly from their experiences and are able to adapt their approach to ensure success with different people and situations.
They are constantly looking for better ways to achieve results.
“It’s not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It’s the one that is most adaptable to change.” Charles Darwin.
5.Adding value
Why would anyone pay attention to you if you don’t have something good to offer?
Successful people know that they need to build up their skill set, whether it’s career related, or even something as simple as helping a friend out.
How do YOU add value to others?
How do YOU make a difference to them?
What do YOU offer that no one else does (or can)?
“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” Albert Einstein.
