This week we have seen Child Protection Departments across the UK under the spotlight again. Authorities routinely pledge that lessons will be learned from all one too many tragedies, but why do they keep re-occurring? Can it be because a blame culture is embedded in organisations when it should be a culture in which people take responsibility and accountability?
It’s not easy, but who will be the first person or department to stand up and admit fault and drive the change needed? Reading through a number of articles based on Child protection agencies, it’s a clear blame game; in one story there were 20 authorities rated as inadequate and in another, the police, social care workers and health professionals had collectively failed to take a child into care which resulted in his death. Should the leader of each of these individual organisations be held responsible for this mishap and lack of change required to safe guard our future generation? Should they be sacked? Well, according to a recent unfair dismissal case, if you don’t follow the procedure they are entitled to large amounts of tax payers money, yet their departments continue to fail….
