It’s official, London is the most stressful place to work in Britain while Manchester is the least stressful.
A survey conducted by Peninsula employment law firm reveals that when asked ‘are you often stressed at work?’ 78% of Londoners admit they are and furthermore 72% say that stress has a negative impact at home.
Other regional ‘stress’ findings – Are you stressed at work?:
- Manchester – 41%
- Edinburgh – 49%
- York – 52%
- Glasgow – 54%
- Newcastle – 57%
- Bristol – 63%
- Birmingham – 69%
- Leeds – 69%
- Cardiff – 71%
Despite the high levels of stress felt, 72% of workers don’t feel that bosses are taking the problem seriously.
Peter Done, Managing Director of Peninsula says that workers need to play their part in tackling stress by sitting down with their boss and talking about how they feel at work and discussing whether their work-life is having a negative impact at home.
“There may be occasion where employees do not feel comfortable in admitting they are stressed to their employer because they feel that they will be victimised, demoted or even dismissed. However dismissing an employee because they are stressed without looking into the problem could see an employer in court.”
Done advises bosses to help combat workplace stress by:
- employing extra staff to handle the workload
- conducting regular one to one meetings with line management
- giving realistic deadlines
“Stress can bring on depression and increased anxiety and employers have a legal duty to assess the risk of work related stress and of course to take adequate measures to control.”
A total of 1854 employees were quizzed for the survey.
