HR tip: Discovering past misdemeanours

pp_default1

These questions are being answered by Learn HR, a market leader in the provision of HR and payroll training and nationally-recognised professional qualifications.

Question: "An accounts clerk has worked for us for 18 months but we have just discovered that he stole money from his previous employer. We did not seek a reference on him nor did we ask any questions. What can we do?"

HR Tip: There is nothing you can now do, other than keep a watchful eye on the clerk. Do not make this overbearing but carry out a sensible programme of audits on him and indeed anyone else who is in a position to defraud you. This is normal practice. Of course you may now wish to consider your policy about taking references and asking searching questions at interview.
