Editor’s note
=============
Spirited by a welcome croissant and warming coffee I felt inwardly
confident to take Cherie Booth, QC head on at yesterday’s JSB
Employment law conference.

Paid maternity leave will soon be extended from six to nine months by
2007 with plans to take it to a full year by the end of the next
Parliament, nothing new here, but as Cherie continued to bang the
drum of equality I couldn’t help feeling a wee bit sorry for the poor
businesses managing this all. Will this do women any favours and
could it all just possibly back-fire as more businesses squirm their
way out of hiring women of a certain age?

Cherie was out the door before she noticed my fervent hand waving but
JSB have kindly emailed her on my behalf – so while I await her reply
I thought we could have our own discussion – just in case, that is
she finds something else better to do …

Are you doing enough to protect your employees’ eyesight?
/—————————————————————
Eyecare Vouchers are a uniquely tangible way to demonstrate your
compliance with the law as well as your concern for the welfare
of your employees. They are the most flexible and convenient way
to ensure your employees receive regular eye tests because
unlike schemes which tie you to a particular chain, Eyecare
Vouchers allow your employees the freedom to choose the optician
that is most convenient to them.

/—————————————————————
New Age Discrimination legislation coming into force in October
2006 will have a profound effect for employers. Setting an

flexible options in its approach to employing older workers with
a significant increase in its proportion of employees aged over
