With BBC1’s ‘The Voice’ initially reaching 10.7 million viewers and achieving double the audience ratings of it’s rival ‘Britains Got Talent’ after 4 weeks of broadcasting, it seems that many UK organisations, like the BBC show, are making talent management a top priority this year.

An SHL Global Assessment Trends Report revealed that 52% of respondents are citing engagement and retention as top of their agenda for 2012. Despite the ongoing financial turmoil that is the ‘recession’ the hopes and legacies for the UK’s 2012 mega events have provided exciting opportunities for many companies to boost motivation levels and attract and retain high performing employees.
Taleo’s Critical Talent Pipeline Research highlights the need for companies to invest in effective talent management programmes. Taleo’s research reveals that 9 out of 10 companies felt there were roles within their organisation without which their company could not grow or even survive, they also recognise that these roles require a specific set of skills and experience which are in high demand and extremely scarce. Taleo’s research reiterates the need to invest in effective recruitment processes, motivation and talent management schemes.
Like BBC’s The Voice where in four ‘super teams’ are formed by Celebrity coaches Sir Tom Jones, Jessie J, Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue it seems that many UK employers are wanting to do the same. 33% of senior executives are planning to recruit permanent professional level staff in the first half of 2012 (source: HR Magazine ‘UK employers confident about growth in 2012 – Robert Half Index’). The same survey revealed that 76% of private companies and 80% of publicly listed companies are confident in their businesses’ growth prospects.
With TV viewer numbers continuing to rise week on week as The Voice’s Coaches develop the UK’s top talent it would be worthwhile for many employers to review their current talent management programmes in order to ensure that 2012 is the year for engaged, motivated and productive workforces across the nation. As Taleo’s Research stated “it’s finding the gem’s that exist…. people that can be unique and really make a contribution to the future”.
