I have appraisals due in the next few weeks with a team I have recently been asked to manage.

On asking how the appraisal related to pay, I was told by our M.D. that pay reviews had already been carried out and the appraisal/performance and objectives are not pay related.

Perhaps I am missing something but don’t most employees see financial gain as reward for achieving or over achieving objectives. They may also seek promotion but this normally means greater reward.

I am concerned about the criteria against which the pay review has been carried out – I have not been told them.

I am also a little concerned that my team are going to think in the same way as me and that objective setting may become a pointless exercise.

Over achieve or under achieve – reward may be the same…
