As part of a car fleet risk assessment we would like to give guidance to Managers as to what can reasonably be expected of those who drive as part of their job. Our staff do not drive for a living, however in sales and engineering roles there is a significant amount of car travel.

Does anyone have a policy on such things as a maximum working day before an overnight stay is required?

Does anyone place a maximum on the number of driving hours in a day (notwithstanding regular breaks etc.)?

Has anyone tried to incorporate rules with their office based staff. From an H&S point of view should we consider the distance or length of driving time an employee has to commute to the office?

If anyone could share their thoughts on best practice or guidance they give to their managers I would be grateful.
