I have just joined a company (350 employees) as HR Manager. the company has not had a designated HR professional before now and there is a lot to get to grips with!!
I am reviewing all policies and procedures and the issue of OSP has arisen. I understood that the company policy is to pay SSP only. However an employee, about to undergo an operation and take 4 weeks off work, has complained that the OSP granted by the MD is not enough.
I now learn that the MD takes the decision to make discretionary OSP on a case by case basis e.g length of service and sickness absence record.
I have advised that such decisions could lead to accusations of unfairness and the company is leaving itself open to possible grievance claims. This practice is not part of the stated company policy.
Does anyone else operate a similar system?
or can anyone offer advice?
