A colleague is returning to work in an NHS post after over seven months sick absence due to stress at work. The circumstances were a sexual harrassing, lazy, incompetent line manager who was eventually persuaded to leave ostensibly due to the health of his mother. No greivance was discussed, and the colleague now feels she has lost out. She feels it will take her a long time to return to her previous work ouput and become financially secure again.
Should my colleague have done anything while away having her nervous breakdown to support herself while sick or now that she is returning to work? Is there anything she can do now to support her return?
As a manager I would like to know how others would support a staff member on long term sickness and returning to work. Where does the support end. Is financial advice appropriate?
