The Apprentice last night dealt a blow to women in business.

Liz has proved throughout the series that she is a hard worker and great at sales, but when it came to the crunch in the boardroom, she did not apply her skills to selling herself against Stuart. When in the boardroom she physically became smaller as Stuart ‘bigged himself up’ to Lord Sugar.

He spoke with a passion about himself and his abilities and what he could offer Alan Sugar’s business – and he was relentless in this. When it came to Liz’s turn to fight for her place on the show, she was sadly lacking. She did not focus on her strengths and convince him that she would be an asset to his business.

All too often, women believe that they will be successful by working hard. However, this is just part of the process. Women need to be able to sell themselves, point out their strengths and ‘big themselves up’.

If women (or men for that matter) do not focus on their strengths and recognise the value they add, they give permission to others not to recognise their strengths and the value they add.

Sadly last night, Liz fell by the wayside as Stuart fought his place – and won.

So, is the right level of women-specific training being offered to success-hungry women at your organisation?
