Businesses urged to plan for disasters

pp_default1

Following severe flooding across parts of England recently, businesses are being urged to put plans in place to protect themselves against further damage and disruption.

Business Link, which provides business advice, support and information, has produced a free online guide at www.businesslink.gov.uk/flooding.

The guide highlights the importance of drawing up a contingency plan in the occurrence of flooding, assessing the risks, ensuring you have appropriate insurance and training employees to deal with flooding. Also included are a number of links to key organisations such as the Environment Agency.

Jonathan Hollow, of businesslink.gov.uk, said: “We have been seeing over the last few days that flooding can be absolutely devastating. As well as suffering damage to your premises or equipment, you may lose stock and supplies. You may also find that you are unable to trade while the damage is being repaired.”

He added that preparing for any eventuality is an essential part of business continuity planning. “Knowing what the risks are, how to protect against them and, importantly, how to recover will give a business the best chance of survival.”
