HR tip: New recruit fails to arrive

When a newly hired employee fails to appear for their first day, contact them immediately to determine if they're ill or have decided not to join. While you can't legally force them to start, understanding their reason helps you plan next steps and move forward with recruitment.

These questions are being answered by Learn HR, a market leader in the provision of HR and payroll training and nationally-recognised professional qualifications.

Question:
"We recruited a man and waited for him to serve his notice with his current employer. However he has failed to turn up to work. What can we do?"

HR tip:
Contact him and find out. He may be sick and therefore subject to your sickness absence arrangements. However if he has just decided not to join you there really is nothing you can do. Do 30 press-ups to get the evil feelings out of your system, then move on.
