Jobs cull as shoemaker bows out of UK production

pp_default1

Shoe giant, Clarks International has announced the closure of its last remaining UK factory based in Ilminster, Somerset.

A spokesperson for the firm told HRZone that the company had for some time been outsourcing its production to the Far East and this move was just the final step to complete a total production transfer overseas.

The factory, currently employs 79 workers and makes children’s shoes.

Peter Rybaruk, Factory Manager commented:

“We have all worked hard to keep the factory competitive. However with all the changes that there have been in international trade, and communications, competitive advantage is now with the developing economies, particularly in the Far East.”

The factory is expected to close early this year. Production at Ilminster started in 1960.
