Wade Groom, a sales clerk in Lacoste’s flagship store in Manhattan, was fired recently for snapping a photo of his payslip and uploading it to Instagram.
Alongside the image, Groom vented his frustration with a call-to-arms against capitalism. And the standard of accommodation in New York.
“Paycheck. Still silly to me. Ever since I was a kid I’ve thought it was completely insane that we have to work all our lives. I still feel that way. Especially when it’s only enough to live in a third world apartment with shi**y everything. Which for some reason in NYC is ok. Anywhere else only trailer trash would live this way. I’m done with it.”
Lacoste managers found out about the image and told Groom he was violating the confidentiality agreement he signed when beginning work with Lacoste.
Interviewed after being fired, Groom told digital New York magazine Gothamist the following:
“Had I know it would have gotten out like this, I never would have done it.”
Hindsight’s 20-20, right?
(For those of you wondering, Groom was being paid $15 an hour plus 3% commission in record sales numbers).
