The chill is settling in, and that only means one thing – winter is coming. No, not the Game of Thrones kind, but the real kind. Shorter days, colder nights, and that strange seasonal mood shift that creeps up on us all. So, as we brace ourselves for hot chocolates and scarves, let’s talk about something just as important – the winter blues and how to stay mentally strong during the winter months.

Winter blues: It’s a thing!

We’re all familiar with the post-summer dip in mood. When the days turn short and the mornings dark, getting out of bed feels like climbing Everest. Some of us even experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), where the lack of sunlight messes with our serotonin levels and circadian rhythm. That’s a scientific way of saying winter can make us feel a bit ‘meh.’

But the good news is you can actually tackle these feelings head-on. Let’s dive into some top tips to keep wellbeing on point this winter.

Lighten up

I’m not talking about ‘lightening up’ your mood (although, that’d help too). I’m talking about daylight. Lack of natural light messes with our internal clock. So, take every chance to step outside during daylight hours, even if it’s cloudy. And if you’re chained to your desk? Consider investing in a light therapy lamp. These lamps mimic sunlight and help boost your mood. It’s like sunshine in a box.

Move, even when you don’t feel like it

I get it – winter and hibernation go hand in hand. But exercise is a proven mood booster. You don’t need to become a gym bunny overnight, but even a little movement can go a long way.

A brisk walk, a yoga session, or even a mini dance party in your living room can help shift that mental fog. Just remember, it’s not about the workout, it’s about getting your body moving.

It’s easy to retreat into a cocoon during the colder months, but staying connected with friends, family, and colleagues is essential.

The cosy routine

Here’s where we can embrace a bit of the Danish ‘hygge’ life. It’s all about creating a cosy, comforting space that nurtures your wellbeing. Dim the lights, throw on a blanket, and grab a hot drink.

Take time to do the things that make you feel good, whether it’s binge-watching a series, reading, or just chilling with your favourite tunes.

Stay connected

It’s easy to retreat into a cocoon during the colder months, but staying connected with friends, family, and colleagues is essential. Even if it’s a virtual coffee or a quick chat, make sure you’re staying social. You’ll be amazed at how much just a short conversation can lift your spirits.

Sleep like a baby (not a newborn, though)

Good sleep is crucial, especially when winter hits. The dark mornings make it tempting to hit snooze, but keep a consistent sleep routine. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep, and try to stick to regular bedtimes, even when the temptation to binge Netflix is strong. Trust me, your mood (and productivity) will thank you.

Grab a cuppa, throw on those fuzzy socks, and take on winter like the wellbeing warrior you are.

Balance your comfort foods

You can’t beat comfort food in winter, but don’t forget to keep things balanced. While hearty meals are a must, make sure you’re still getting in those nutrient-packed foods – think leafy greens, Omega-3-rich fish, and plenty of water. A balanced diet keeps both your body and mind functioning well.

Flexibility is key

If you’re a leader reading this, remember that flexibility goes a long way. Allow you and your team some room to breathe, whether that’s offering flexible working hours or encouraging breaks to get outside during daylight. Winter is tough on everyone, so a bit of empathy and support can make all the difference.

Winter blues: Wrap up

Winter doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. By being proactive and making small changes, you can look after your mental health and help others do the same. So, grab a cuppa, throw on those fuzzy socks, and take on winter like the wellbeing warrior you are.
