Blog: Becoming a Time Lord – Progressing your career without benefit of hindsight

pp_default1

Meg Burton’s interview in my last blog prompted some thoughts about how we create that awareness of what our gap is…

You know the gap that with hindsight we can see as clearly as the nose on our face (if you missed it click here).

Unless you have Dr Who like abilities we don’t have the benefit of hindsight so how do we see with hindsight-like clarity what our gaps really are? Read on for four tips on seeing that gap:

TIP 1 – Fast-forward your thinking

You don’t need a time machine to project into the future, just a little imagination. Forget job titles, defined career paths. What do you WANT to be doing in 3-5 years time? Now’s not the time to be cautious…what seems out of reach but would be incredible if you got there? How does it feel to be there, what will you be doing? Now hold that thought.

TIP 2 – Learn from other people

There are so many people out there willing to share their story. People love talking about themselves and their careers. Identify people who seem to have the skills that you want, the job that you want, the results that you want and ASK questions. How did they get there, what did they do along the way, how did they develop the skills?

TIP 3 – Create a plan

You’ve identified where you want to be, what skills you need to develop and some ideas for developing them. What are you prepared to do to make sure you fill that gap. Up for a real challenge? What options do you have to bring the 5 years to 3 or 3 to 1 year?  Write it down with tangible actions and deadlines.

TIP 4 – Take action

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world!" Joel Barker.

What’s your 1st step? Be bold – What can you do to move you forward in the next 24 hours?

There are so many more things l’d like to share with you and if I had a tip 5 it would be think about who you want to be in 3-5 years time and start now to be that person. More on that in Mistake Number 5 of my free e-book “The 7 Mistakes HR Professionals Make”.  Read on for more details.

I’m always looking to hear new experiences so if you’d like to feature in one of the posts I’d love to hear from you.  Whether you are at the start of your career or have just made a change – your story will provide inspiration to others.
