Question:

"We have an employee whose performance is well below par. What can we do with him?"

HR tip:

You should talk to him, explain the performance required, point out the performance he is giving and demonstrate the gap. Try then to ascertain whether he is not capable of doing the work to standard or chooses not to. If it is 'can’t do', you need to take all reasonable steps to help him perform well. If that fails try to redeploy him in more suitable work, and if that fails dismiss on grounds of incapability. However, if it is 'won’t do', you need to apply your discipline procedure.
